Wednesday, March 30th, 2011the whip and a few little reviews
Monday, March 7th, 2011I’ve put a couple things on my bike recently and it’s looking pretty in blue so I thought I’d take a moment to say a couple
of things. I’m riding the tig-welded ESB with dual 26 inch wheels and 160mm cranks and I’m loving it. The ESB wasn’t
designed for use with 26″ but I wanted to run a wider range of large tyres and rims, and I haven’t had any problems with
pedal scrape (especially with 160mm cranks) so I’m stoked on it
I’m running the NS Trailmaster 32h rims laced up to a pair of the prototype superted hubs, and they’ve held up pretty
well. I’ve once again been wrought with injury so I haven’t had that much time to really beat them up but so far so
good. I also recently got myself a pair of the dmr Supermoto tyres which I’m really feeling. They’re the lightweight 2.2
kevlar version and provide a good amount of kush, especially as I run them at around 40-50 psi
The tread on these tyres is pretty cool too, and they are reasonably grippy on dirt as well as more solid surfaces
(amazing noise on tarmac too) and although they do have a good amount of tread they don’t feel any more sluggish
than the slicker ‘big apple’ tyres I was running before. I guess one of the main hang-ups people have with 26″ is
that it’s less efficient, but to me it’s not a problem, I mean I was keeping up with everyone else on our recent ride,
covering a good 35-40 miles. Thumbs up for these tyres
I’ve been running these Monster Traps straps for a while now, through snow, rain and dirt, and they’re definitely
the best straps I’ve ridden so far. They use a similar construction to others on the market using 3 way velcro and
a D-shaped ring to allow an angled strap. As well as keeping their shape really nicely (even when you squish ‘em
a bit) I’ve been really impressed with their durability; a great choice of materials make for a pretty heavy-duty
strap, especially in the crucial area on the outside edge
A lot of people break their straps really quickly because many straps have exposed thin material which goes
through the body of the pedal and round the sides, which when a bike scrapes on the floor is the most
vulnerable spot, but the PVC type material which covers this area is perfect for keeping it all protected. I don’t
throw my bike that much (so I shouldn’t) but these straps have had a good few months of riding and this
material is just starting to disintegrate, nice
Many thanks to the people of Monster traps for sending them over for me to test, I’ve been very impressed
with how they’ve held up and I don’t feel I want to ride anything else, thumbs way up. If you can get your hands
on a pair like mine with the tough plastic-y material then I recommend you do (strap companies need to pay
attention to that part of the strap construction) available from their site at monstertrapx.blogspot.com
I’ve got ligament damage in my right ankle so it’ll be at least a month until I’m riding again properly so maybe
I’ll do a video & proper bike check then but that’s all for now!
